Mrs. Delvecchio's Grade 4 class celebrated "Diversity Day". The students and their families each brought in a dish that originated from their families ethnic background. The students enjoyed gingerbread, currie chicken, keilbasa, empanadas, stuffed grape leaves, cornbread, spring rolls and much more! Thanks to all the families who helped, we had a great time! Happy Thanksgiving!
Week ending 14-Nov-2008
Math/Science: The fourth grade class and fifth grade class got together for a lab on PUMPKINS! The students estimated the height, length, weight and circumference of 3 different size pumpkins. With the handy measuring tape the students measured the actual height, weight and circumference of their pumpkins. They also weighed their pumpkins on a scale and recorded all their findings. The students also predicted how many seeds they would find in their pumpkins before carving . Most predictions were under their estimated guesses!
Social Studies: The students are studying for their unit test on Tuesday. As a class, we took notes to help prepare students for the test. The class continues to learn about how Colonial America began. The students took on the role of a Pilgrim boy/girl and wrote a diary entry as if they were a passenger on The Mayflower. The entries were typed by the students and are on display in the classroom.
Reading: We read How Baseball Saved Us. The story was about a young boy and his family being sent to a government camp. Baseball became the pastime at the camp.
Math/Science Lab
Mrs. Delvecchio's Grade 4 and Mrs. Fortuna's Grade 5 classes had a Math/Science Lab. During this lab, the students weighed, measured, and found the height of each pumpkin. The students also tried to predict how many seeds would be in their pumpkins.
20-Oct-2008 - 07-Nov-2008
Science: The students had a presentation on the function of the liver. We are just wrapping up a unit on plants. We discussed the functions of the parts of a plant and the basic needs a plant needs to survive. We had a lab where we placed celery stalks in some colored water. Over a few days we observed the changes that occurred. The leaves on the celery stalk had turned colors of red or blue. Science test will be held on Friday 11/7.
Social Studies: The students paired up with partners to research a president from the past. After gathering up lots of facts and information the students created posters about their chosen president. The posters are hanging in the hallway upstairs!
The fourth grade class also took part in a school wide election for president. After reviewing in class each of the candidate's viewpoints, the students went to the polls and voted! The winner was Barack Obama. Our family votes were also tallied and Barack Obama was victorious! We are now learning all about the history of the United States of America.
Math: We are subtracting with regrouping using 3, 4, 5 and 6 digit numbers. Please review subtraction at home. Lots of careless errors!
English: We have learned simple, complete predicates and combining sentences with conjunctions "and", "but" and "or".
Have a great week!
"Go Lucky Charm!"
"You can do it Lucky Charm!"
Lucky Charm brings home the gold!
In Science we conducted a stem study. We used a stalk of celery to show how water travelled up the stem. This was to show how the plant receives its nutrients.
