Dear Parents,
Once again, during summer break our school will be participating in the Connecticut Governor's Summer Reading Challenge. As parents we are aware of the many benefits that come from reading and also the benefits of being read to. This program is geared toward promoting reading statewide. Our students are encouraged to participate by reading lots of books this summer and keeping track of all book titles by using the provided journal. The journals will be collected in September and all classroom book totals will be combined for one school book total. The total will then be sent to the chairperson for the reading program. This program is very exciting in that our students will be gaining the benefits that come from reading, and our school will be represented in the statewide count. Our students have been asked to keep their journals in a safe place so that they are not misplaced. For your child's convenience, I have prepared a SUGGESTED reading list which you will find enclosed. The list will ensure that your child is reading at the appropriate level. For your convenience I have added all REQUIRED reading to the book list, and lists have been forwarded to area public libraries. I am hopeful that all students will participate by reading and handing in a journal in September, this is in fact a reading challenge. Last year our students read a combined total of 1,593 books. Can we beat that number this year? You bet we can! And, most importantly, the more we read the better our reading will be.
As always, I thank you for supporting our St. Stephen School Reading. Have a great summer and many happy reading adventures,
Mrs. Wilonski
School Librarian
